Hospital negligence cited as cause of death in lawsuit against VA

Residents of Louisiana and Americans everywhere may be concerned by the recent news of widespread problems and poor care in Veterans Administration hospitals across the nation. For many people though, those feelings hit much closer to home when they hear and witness stories of an individual family’s loss and suffering at the hands of such poor care.

One such story is making news and it involves a tragic loss of life that one family alleges was due to negligence on the part of VA hospital staff. The children of a military veteran allege that their father was repeatedly denied treatment for renal failure for five days. This resulted, they say, in a heart attack followed by a year of dialysis, ultimately leading to their father’s death.

If true, the negligence that the family asserts is just another example of what appears to be a widespread pattern affecting veterans and their families.

For its part in this case the VA has denied any wrongdoing in the lead-up to the veteran’s death. It has also denied the family’s tort claim against a VA hospital.

This case may serve as an important example of the real life effects that hospital negligence can have. Veterans and non-veterans, too, should have a right to safe, responsible, and timely medical care when they check into any medical facility.
